The program’s greatest success came in 2015 and 2014, when the Badgers reached the NCAA Championship Game in consecutive years. In 2015, Wisconsin, led by future NBA stars Frank Kaminsky, Sam Dekker, and Josh Gasser, made a remarkable run to the national title game. They faced Duke in the final, but despite a valiant effort, the Badgers were defeated 68-63, leaving them with a national runner-up finish. The previous year, in 2014, Wisconsin advanced to the Final Four but fell to Kentucky in a dramatic Elite Eight matchup.

In addition to these significant tournament runs, Wisconsin has been a perennial contender in the Big Ten, regularly competing for conference titles and NCAA Tournament bids. The program has captured six Big Ten Tournament championships and has made numerous NCAA Tournament appearances, consistently finishing among the top teams in the conference and nationally. Under long-time head coach Bo Ryan, who led the team from 2001 to 2015, Wisconsin became known for its tough, disciplined play, making them a formidable opponent in the postseason.

Wisconsin plays its home games at Kohl Center, located on the university’s campus in Madison, Wisconsin. Opened in 1998, the Kohl Center is one of the premier basketball arenas in the Big Ten, with a seating capacity of 17,230 for basketball games. The arena has become a true home-court advantage for the Badgers, with a passionate fan base that creates a raucous atmosphere for every home game. 

The Kohl Center is widely regarded as one of the loudest and most intimidating venues in college basketball. The Badgers’ student section, known as the “Kohl Center Student Section”, plays a large role in creating the arena’s energy, often packing the seats and offering vocal support for the team. Over the years, the Kohl Center has become synonymous with Wisconsin basketball, hosting countless memorable games, including NCAA Tournament contests.

Notable Alumni

Wisconsin has produced a number of players who have gone on to have successful careers in the NBA and professional basketball. The most famous recent player is Frank Kaminsky, who played for the Badgers from 2011 to 2015. Kaminsky was the star of the 2015 team that reached the national title game, earning National Player of the Year honors that season. Kaminsky was drafted 9th overall by the Charlotte Hornets in the 2015 NBA Draft and has had a successful NBA career.

Other notable Wisconsin basketball alumni include Sam Dekker, Khalil Iverson, Michael Finley, and Nigel Hayes. Michael Finley, who played for Wisconsin from 1991 to 1995, had a standout NBA career, earning two NBA championships with the San Antonio Spurs. Sam Dekker, a key member of the 2015 Final Four team, was selected by the Houston Rockets in the 2015 NBA Draft and went on to play for multiple NBA teams.
